What is Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient soothing foot massage used for thousands of years to restore health and well-being. Our feet are covered with reflex points which correspond to specific areas and organs throughout our whole body, which, when stimulated, encourage our brain to take notice of anything which needs correcting.
The specific relaxing massage to so many pressure points allows us to become deeply relaxed, further encouraging optimal health, deep relaxation, and varying degrees of pain relief throughout our whole body.
Reflexologists are trained to correct imbalances and release blocked meridians (vital energy pathways) to restore the flow of energy throughout the body. Treatments are tailored to individual requirements.
Benefits of Reflexology
By touching reflected points connections are established involving the circulatory, nervous and endochrine systems, which release Natures' own natural pain-relief, endorphins.
Reflexology is ideal for:
Stress, and stress related illnesses, migrains etc.,
- Chronic and acute back and neck pain
- Low energy levels
- Infertility or loss of libido
- Osteorthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis
- Bowel, bladder, digestive disorders
- IBS symptoms
- Fibromyalgia
- MS symptoms
- Male / female health issues
- Endometriosis, menopause etc,
- Acute anxiety
- Asthma
- Hay fever

Reflexology is profoundly relaxing and is suitable for all ages.
Theories as to how Reflexology works
It is now thought that modern systems of pain relief e.g. TENS machines, work by mildly stimulating the nerve pathways. All the receptors are filled, the gates shut and severe pain stimuli cannot be passed up the spinal cord to the brain. It has been hypothesized that Reflexology works in the same way as a TENS machine, to block pain.
Endorphin Release Theories
Endorphins are the body's natural opiates or painkillers, with results similar to that of morphine, and serve to reduce the amount of pain that we feel by inhibiting the activity of a neurotransmitter called substance P, that is thought to transmit pain.
It is theorised that a Reflexology treatment stimulates the release of endorphins which eases pain and gives the body the same natural elevation in mood as very strong painkillers.
The Feet as a 'U'Bend Theory
In a plumbing system, the 'U' bend traps all the debris that passes through the sink, toilet or wash basin.
The feet are the furthest point in the circulatory system from the heart. They are also the part of the body where the effect of gravity is greatest, and are in effect, the 'U' bend of the body.
It is theorised that calcium, uric acid and lymphatic deposits in the blood accumulate in the feet, interfering with the normal circulation of blood and lymph.
Reflexology breaks up and moves these deposits, thus improving blood and lymph circulation.
The effect of Reflexology may be due to an isolated factor, or a combination of factors, the important point to bear in mind in the meantime is, that regardless of how and why it works, reflexology does work and benefits thousands of people all over the world.
"For most of my life I have suffered with headaches and anxiety and accepted that this was the norm. Since having regular reflexology what a difference it has made to my life. I am healthier and happier than I have been for years and really look forward to my fortnightly visits." Louise, Altrincham
"For me, reflexology is the most relaxing experience I've ever had. The sensation of floating is sheer bliss. Reflexology can take the mind and body to a different place - it's one you always want to go back to! Try it!" Trish, Hanley
"Initially I tried reflexology and an occasional ear candling session because I'd heard they were great for people who suffered from sinus congestion and headaches. I was searching for a better solution than just pill popping. And since then I'm thrilled to say I haven't had any serious sinus related problems... AND I've discovered numerous other physical and emotional benefits as well: Reflexology and ear candling are important ingredients in my personal recipe for survival and success. They help me to relax. I think they contribute to weight loss as well, as I am not eating whilst I am having my pampering sessions and when I am at home I dont feel like comfort eating so much. That part is just a bonus side effect!" Cindy, Uttoxeter
"I'm grateful for the significant improvement that reflexology has made to my allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Over a period of two years this treatment has brought about the cessation of the debilitating congestion and mucus secretion that are characteristic of this disease." John, Blythe Bridge
